What is sustainability?
Sustainability is loosely defined as meeting growing human needs for natural resources while conserving and protecting environmental quality and the natural resource base essential for future life and development.

What are the economic costs of sustainable design?

Considering the life-cycle costs of operating and maintaining a building, sustainable design can greatly reduce the overall cost of a buildings by increasing efficiencies within the mechanical and lighting systems, reducing the need to cool the building by cutting the overall heat load on the building. All of this means lower operating and maintenance costs, which compromise one of the largest costs of a building during it's life. There are also compelling benefits to the building occupants, including improved air quality, lighting levels, comfort levels, and personal control of environmental conditions, all of which can lead to incresed productivity.

What sustainable experience does Stanley Architects have?

The Stanley Architects design team, led by Lars Stanley, AIA, has extensive sustainable design experience. As chairman of the Sustainable Architecture Committee (AIA Austin) and a member of Austin’s Green Builder Program, Lars Stanley has been bringing energy conscious, practical, and cost efficient design to institutional and commercial projects. Stanley Architects is experienced in projects within critical water-quality zones affected by strict local environmental ordinances, most recently master planning and design for the Austin Waldorf School. The award-winning Franklin High School in El Paso, Texas featured numerous energy and water saving techniques, reducing cost both in the long-term as well as in construction costs. Franklin was completed on time and $1.1 million under budget.

What are some aspects of sustainability typically integrated into Stanley Architects' design approach?

Site Development, Master Planning, Strong Project Team Collaboration, HVAC Commissioning - From Programming Stages to Occupancy, Energy Efficient HVAC Design and Support, Energy Efficient Building Form/Materials, Grey (Recycled) Water Systems, Daylighting, Passive Solar Shading, Natural Ventilation, Construction Waste Management, to name a few.
